Brixham Heritage Sailing Regatta and Rally - 2019
Saturday 25th May and Sunday 26th May.
The Brixham Heritage Regatta has its roots back in the early 1800's!
The working trawlers all have big powerful rigs to drag huge nets behind them whilst fishing and so racing them has always been fiercely competitive and exciting. During the events heyday of the 1920's and 20's, the racing was an incredible spectacle, not only with a large fleet of big ketches, but also a fleet of the great classic yachts and several famous J-Class yachts.
After the war, the racing lapsed and as sailing trawlers became commercially outdated, the fleet slowly disappeared. However, through the efforts of local skippers, restoration projects, charities and trusts who preserve several of the Brixham Trawlers, the Brixham Trawler fleet re-emerged from 1997.
Today, the event is one of the highlights of the traditional sailing calendar.
