Cornwall – South West Coast Path & Exploring Ashore

Sail and Walk the SW Coast Path

The South West Coast Path allows you to walk the Cornwall, Devon and Dorset coastal landscape in all its rugged beauty, but there are other ways to experience this coast from a different perspective. Classic Sailing has sailing holidays and short breaks that explore the coast and much of the South Coast has deep water near the shore so you sail within metres of the cliffs if the wind is right, anchor in small covers and glide up the drowned river valleys between tree lined banks.

Live aboard a wooden boat as your floating base and row ashore to hug an oak tree or stretch your legs along stunning beaches and clifftop paths. We are very lucky to have the South West Coast Path running the length of Cornwall, and Devon coast. As long as our sailing ships can find a sheltered anchorage and small boat landing spot, you can access the Coast Path and the myriad of inland footpaths that join it.

Sometimes we have specific sailing and walking voyages but the type of voyage to look for that generally takes time to explore ashore are our Coastal Wandering Voyages that don’t have a tight itinerary and are free to literally wander where the wind can take us.

Sail and Trek – a Great Combination

Classic Sailing run sailing holidays on beautiful wooden boats and tall ships all over the world, so you can sail and walk in places like East Greenland, the Outer Hebrides or tropical Cape Verde.

Cornwall is our backyard and our skippers know the coast and landing spots ‘like a smuggler. ’If you want to have the best of both worlds – adventure afloat and exploration ashore then three of our Cornwall based vessels have wooden rowing boats so you can make forays ashore under oar.

Rowing Gig as Ships Boat on Grayhound

Three masted lugger ‘Grayhound’ has two mini gig boats for all trips ashore which fits in with their ethical ethos of green travel. Grayhound is 108ft long overall with plenty of deck space so the ship’s rowing boats fit on deck and go with them everywhere from the Caribbean to the Scillies. Owners Marcus and Freya are keen walkers and explorers and have taken guest crew on some epic walks in far flung places as well as their current sailing grounds in Cornwall, Scillies and Brittany.
