Themed Breaks & Events in Torbay Area
Brixham - Home of the Heritage Fleet
Golden Vanity has a berth on Brixham Town Events Pontoon, so what better place to step onto a historic working boat and go sailing in the bay. Not only does Golden Vanity offer 2-3 day taster voyages with immediate access beyond the long harbour wall, out into the huge sailing area of Torbay, she has some great playmates locally too.
As well as Golden Vanity, Brixham Harbour is home to a Heritage Fleet of original 70-100ft sailing trawlers including Provident, Leader, Vigilance and Pilgrim. Together they make quite a sight on the pontoon, but they look even more spectacular as they set sail to go out sailing.
The best time to cross bowsprits with these larger shipmates, and other traditional vessels from further afield, is to book Golden Vanity during events like the Brixham Heritage Weekend on the late May Bank Holiday.
Brixham Heritage Regatta 2019
If you are quick you can book a berth on Golden Vanity during the Heritage Regatta and be out of the water for the racing between the last remaining deep sea sailing trawlers for the George Cup....but there are classes for luggers and other size working boats too.
There is a mid week sailing break after the festival too, and often the visiting traditional vessels will still be around to take photos of.
Torbay Air Show 2019
Brixham and Torquay host an international Airshow each year in June, and the air displays take place over the sea, so the best place to get an un-interrupted view is by being out on the water. The added bonus is you can also do your own posing by sailing Golden Vanity around in front of the many spectators on Brixham harbour wall or Berry Head. Red Arrows, Wing Walkers and historic military aircraft are part of the display in the daytime, but you can still find lovely anchorages like Anstey's Cove, a nice meal aboard and peace in the evening.
These are both short breaks with sail handling, tuiton and exploration under sail, but you might not go as far as a similar length short break that does not indlude an event.
An Artists Boat - Come on an Art Course
Golden Vanity was built for marine artist Arthur Briscoe in 1908. Sadly he is no longer alive, but local artist Toni Knights has all the credentials to carry on the tradition. It was his idea to run art voyages on Golden Vanity and they were such a success, we now offer them on Provident too. Creativity is in little Vanity's planks and we aim to continue the tradition of using her wide wooden decks as a platform for budding artists. Whether you are a beginner or an accomplished artist who would like to sketch rigging, sailing ships, passing fishing boats or the maritime ports of South Devon, Vanity would be a characterful floating base or an interesting week or short break. You do need to help sail the ship too, or there would be no sailing action to sketch.
