Grayhound is going off on her ocean travels again in the summer of 2019, so there are limited opportunities to sail her in the West Country for day sails or pure family holiday voyages. The Dartmouth Day Sails will fill up fast, and we can't think of a more perfect port and coastline to get into the spirit of sailing this replica of an armed privateer.
Day Sails from Dartmouth
During the day sail, you can expect to get fully involved in sailing Grayhound, hoisting and setting sails, and helming. No experience is necessary, just willingness to get involved and enthusiasm. A day sail, is really a taster day or experience, and a great gift or surprise.
Dartmouth Harbour is very encouraging to eye catching sailing ships like Grayhound, and this historic Naval Port is deep and lined with historic forts. This drowned river valley has the village of Kingswear and a steam train on the East bank and the steep slopes on the West bank house the Royal Naval College and a waterfront and high street that have walked by many an admiral. The town has a real sense of history which has not been spoilt and classy cafes and restaurants add to the buzz.
After a welcome and brief safety talk it is straight into your sailing day. The River Dart is navigable inland for several miles so you might start with some flat water amongst the oak tree lined hillsides. If the forecast is good then you have a bend in the estuary to negotiate and some very photogenic backdrops as you head out to sea.
South Devon coast is rugged and designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty so there is plenty of scenery to enjoy whilst you get to grips with the ropes or maybe steering Grayhound with her big tiller. There are jobs to do for big and little hands so it is a great day out for all the family. the owners and skippers Marcus and Freya brought up their own son on Grayhound and are well used to young families on board. They chose their deckhands carefully to be sympathetic to all ages of guests.
Grayhound is 106ft overall with 3500 square foot of canvas, this is a great day out for novices and experienced sailors looking for something different. Get really involved in the sailing as a family and maybe even fire a few cannons! This is a great day out that suits all ages and abilities.
You won’t go hungry. On the day sails Grayhound always do a 'summery' cooked lunch, salads and quiches or lasagne and plenty of homemade cakes or West Country cream tea.
