Firth of Clyde - SW Scotland in 2018
Maybe crew like SW Scotland as a cruising ground. Joining in Greenock is easy, whether you live in Scotland or not. All you need to do is be able to get to Glasgow Central Stations and Greenock is only a short hop train. Starting your voyage from Greenock takes you straight out onto a wide part of the Clyde and the city landscape changes to bracken covered hills.
Explore the flat sheltered water of the Kyles of Bute, eat freshly caught shrimps in East Loch Tarbert, or oysters in Loch Fyne. Beyond the sea opens up and the view is dominated by the high mountains ridges on the island of Arran. Watch out for submarine periscopes and more attractive wildlife.
The route North is either the long way around the Mull of Kintyre or through the Crinan Canal. Fast tides are a feature of the deep sounds and shallows between islands like Jura and the mainland. Whisky Distilleries on Jura and Islay seek to lure you into island anchorages. The whirlpools and over-falls of Corryvreken are nor far from your route to Fort William and the Caledonian Canal.
The Caledonian Canal
There is a big rift in the geology that cuts right across Scotland, and the Caledonian Canal is a route to the East Coast which includes wide open lochs like Loch Ness, and more canal like stretches with lock gates to gain or lose height. You may see Ben Nevis - the highest mountain in the UK as you start your traverse. The canal pops out into the sea again at Inverness and ther might be time for a quick sail in the Moray Firth before ending your voyage.
East Coast of Scotland to NE England
Look out for the resident bottle-nosed dolphins in the Moray Firth on the way out into the North Sea. The East Coast of Scotland and across the border into Northumberland is a tough coast for seafarers and fishermen. The Farne Islands with its puffins and bird reserve or Lindesfarne are worth a stop.
Sunderland Tall Ships Festival 2018
The main tall ships race of the summer is starting from Sunderland in NE England. This proud port had hosted such spectacular events before. The Race circuit is Sunderland - Esjberg - Stavanger- Harlingen so it is bound to attract the big Scandinavian square riggers and Polish and Russian ships coming from the Baltic.
