Maybe and her bigger sister Blue Clipper use Portimaio near Faro as their winter refit base so they know the Portuguese and nearby Spanish coastline well. In 2020 Maybe is celebrating her 90th birthday and she wants to be sailing in the winter months.
Affordable and Different
The golden beaches of the Algarve in Portugal and the inland white villages of Andulusia are warm enough to be winter sun destinations, but the area as a winter sailing ground is less well known. The sailing is likely to be breezy and if the winds are creating a lee shore then there may be an occasional need to sail well off this rocky coast. This is ocean like sailing with smattering of intreguiging historic ports like Cadiz, Tarifa and Caiscais. Palm trees, souk like alley ways, carved wooden balconies and tiles streets are an artist and photographers dream.
Not far from the straits of Gibraltar, many a sea battle has been fought off these shores (Battle of St Vincente, Battle of Trafalgar). Every port is steeped in nautical history after centuries of sea raids from the Moors to Francis Drake.
You won't find many yachts out sailing with you, but if you love that out there feeling, salt in your hair abd warm sun on your shoulders in quiet cafes ashore then these could be a great winter escape.
