What Pegasus does Best

Pegasus was built from new as a youth sail training vessel that would be both exciting and seaworthy for young crews, but also be eye catching enough to turn heads at every port she graced. Since 2008 she has given many young people a great sense of pride to be sailing and navigating such a good looking vessel. Many adult spectators have watched he sail past with envy, but now you can sail on her for a few choice events for adult crew with plenty of hands on sailing.

Her incredibly patient skipper Craig and mate Dan look forward to offering these adventure cruises, with plenty of opportunity to really showcase what Pegasus can do, as a sabbatical from their busy youth work schedule.  As with most sail training skippers that work with teenagers and young people with disabilities and special needs, they are excellent and inventive in how they communicate and teach sailing. If you want a well organised deck with a crew very used to explaining the ropes and manoeuvres, then Pegasus would be a great choice to race on or go on your first offshore passage.

Folk Boat with Phil Beer

She has proven herself as a spacious and elegant cruising boat too, with her 'Folk Boat' charters where famous folk singer and instrumentalist Phil Beer ('Show of Hands') hired Pegasus for several weeks a year to run music workshops with many a cracking music session below decks.

We think here adult cruises will be like 'gold dust' so don't leave it too late to book

Craig and Hannah

Pegasus Skipper – Craig Young

Craig says …"I started sailing when I was fifteen; I was awarded a bursary to do a trip on TS Royalist, the Sea Cadets’ square rigger. I didn’t really want to go and tried to send a mate instead, but they forced me anyway and it turns out I quite like being at sea. I did a few more trips with the Sea Cadets on Royalist, including the 2005 Tall Ships Race and got my Competent Crew on one of their yachts before deciding I wanted to do sail training full time. I did a year as a volunteer bosun and have worked my way up in qualifications since to become Mate and then Skipper, sailing many different boats in lots of exciting places, always enjoying the beach bonfires, whale spotting and starry night sails and still ever reliant on milky coffee; the odd epic film soundtrack and awful cheese jokes."

Craig has raised money to help fund more voyages for young people suffering deprivation, hardship or disability over the years!

Craig is one great sailor one really nice human being!

Debbie from Classic Sailing says …"I have sailed with Craig on a couple of different vessels through his career, and the lasting impression he has always made on me that he is kind to everyone. A genuine people's person and someone you would want with you for everyones morale if skies turned gloomy”

Ship mate Dan

Pegasus Mate Dan

Dan says …"My name is Dan and I am 23 years old. I have been working on boats for 2 years and currently work on Pegasus, the Island Trust’s own green pilot cutter. I started sailing in 2014 when I went on Tectona as a young person for a week. My favourite thing to do on board is put up the topsail. In November 2015 Hannah and I were invited to Oman by Sail Training International to represent the UK at a wonderful event in support of international friendship and understanding. One day I want to own my own boat and sail across the Atlantic. Sailing is the perfect way to see the world from a unique perspective and widen horizons. It’s brilliant for teamwork and improving confidence"

Pegasus and Moosk Relief Skipper/ Relief Mate - Hannah

Hannah says… "Hi, I’m Hannah. I first went on a sail training voyage in 2008 and enjoyed it so much that I was soon sailing as a volunteer with the Ocean Youth Trust. This gave me opportunities to sail in the UK and abroad, including to Iceland, the Netherlands and Norway. I started working for the Island Trust in 2014, since then I’ve sailed with a wide range of groups on all three boats. I’ve taken part in events such as ASTO Small Ships Races and Paimpol festival, as well as becoming an RYA Cruising Instructor. I particularly enjoy meeting new people and having opportunities to visit and explore new ports."
