Explorers wanting to connect with their Celtic roots. The 450 mile route travels along the coasts of Scotland, Ireland, Isle of Man, Wales and around the tip of Cornwall. Keen sailors wanting to experience longer passages between ports and anchorages. How long the continuous sailing is between ports depends hugely on the weather, but there are some very special places the ship could stop. There is limited time to achieve the miles, so this is a great voyage for nature lovers who love being at sea. The seas are rich in fish and plankton, stirred up by strong tides and trawler fishermen from Ireland, Wales & England.

FULL VOYAGE DESCRIPTION

7 days away from the tourists and hubbub ashore. Explore the wild side of Europe on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, with great sunsets and lots of wildlife. Rugged cliffs, undeveloped coastlines and sandy estuaries and a wide sea route used by Viking longboats and all sorts of open craft as a gateway to Scotland and islands further North. You never more than 100 miles from a coast but the Irish Sea has an 'out there' feeling.

Variety, Adventure and Sheltered anchorage Choices

There are sections of open sea and some interesting tidal 'gates' to get through as Maybe progresses Southwards along the Atlantic Edge of Europe . If  you want interesting mile building with lots of navigational interest and pilotage challenges then this is a classic route. The experience of  night sailing, knowing when you are on watch and when you are free to snooze, read or do your own thing. Every watch is enlivened by small things - whether it is a bird landing on deck or the smell of bacon for breakfast after an early morning watch.

Start your voyage tacking or gybing you way down the firth of Clyde and the long mainland shoreline of Mull of Kintyre, or head accross the bay past the island of Arran. Leave Scottish waters and enter the fast tides near Rathlin Island and the Antrim coast.This seaworthy gaff ketch might romp down the whole North Sea without stopping, or tackle the route in bite size chunks. It all depends on the weather. Conditions are likely to varied. Arran, Bangor, Peel on Isle of Man, Dublin, Angelsey, Pembrokeshire or the Isles of Scilly are all possibles to break your journey....but not all of them!

Rugged Coastlines with Natural Beauty 

You are passing some of the best coastal landscapes in Britain - so the natural anchorages off some of these coasts are sublime, especially i you have an interest in geology or rock climbing.. Scottish islands like Arran have big mountain backdrops so watch out for eagles on the summer thermals. Spot the distant mountains of the Lake District National Park, look out for the Mountain of Mourne in Northern Ireland, and even the Isle of Man has modest mountains to spot as a landmark. As you reach North Wales, Anglesey and the Llyn Peninsula have stunning anchorages ranging from remote beaches to ruined copper mines. 

This journey could be challenging at times if the wind is from the South or South West but if you get enough 'miles in the bank' on the way down then you the Scillies might be a good last stop.

Celtic nations & Music

If you manage to sail the full length of the Irish Sea and South West Scotland without bumping in to some traditional live music ashore, we will be very surprised.

On a sailing voyage we never use the word itinerary, as skippers will always be aiming for the best sailing and shore landings for the forecast and most idyllic or sheltered anchors and ports. They are as keen as you to include some of the highlights described below, but you have to go with Mother Nature, not fight her. The description below is based on what we think might be possible, based on past trips, or experience, but nothing is guaranteed on a sailing voyage.

HANDS ON HOLIDAYS

Whether you are an experienced sailor or a complete beginner, the professional crew will train you to be guest crew from the moment you arrive, with the intention that everybody works together to sail the ship. The common thread to all Classic Sailing holidays is ‘Hands on’ participation on ships that use ropes, blocks and tackles and ‘people power’ to set sail.

Greenock

Greenock is a historic industrial town and port beside the Firth of Clyde, some 25 miles west of Glasgow.

Art and poetry.

Greenock was first of all a fishing community that become the site of the first dock on the Clyde in 1711. The town’s long maritime history is celebrated at the Custom House Museum.

Much of the west end of Greenock retains its impressive Victorian buildings, not least the 245-foot Victoria Tower which remains incomplete.

Other attractions include McLean Museum and Art Gallery and the Old West Kirk, which dates from 1591 and features stained glass by artists such as Dante Gabriel Rossetti.

Robert Burns lover Mary Campbell (Highland Mary) is buried in Greenock Cemetery.

How to get here

By Road & Parking

Head up the M6 into Scotland it becomes the M74 which takes you right into Glasgow. Then take the M8 past Glasgow Airport that then becomes the A8 coast road to Greenock.

Most our voyages sail further than 3 miles from the shore so check that you will be covered sailing outside territorial waters.

Classic Sailing recommend Topsail Insurance http://www.classic-sailing.co.uk/travel-insurance They have policies designed for sailing crew on yachts or tall ships, whether you want an annual policy or a single trip. Falmouth, Cornwall

Latest port updates

We now have several vessels that use Falmouth as a joining or leaving port. As every vessel is different, and we do not have our own pontoon there, all joining instructions are slightly different. Any changes will be communicated to you before your voyage start date. 

This is a list of the likely joining locations for each vessel, but sometimes they can also be at anchor. It is always best to call the ship's phone on the day. 

Custom House Quay next to the Chain Locker is the usual place for joining Grayhound, Irene and Eda Frandsen. 

Pendennis Marina behind the Maritime museum is the usual place for joining Agnes, Leader, Provident and Pilgrim.

Port Pendennis is the small marina behind the National Maritime Museum Cornwall and the nearest rail station is 'Falmouth Town' (3 mins walk). The Maritime Museum has a big tower like a lighthouse so aim for that and at the entrance, turn right and walk down the side of the museum. The gate to the marina is behind the museum building.

Custom House Quay is a stone quay enclosing a small wet dock in the Centre of Falmouth Town. It is used for some of the foot ferries to St Mawes in the peak summer. Only 5 minutes walk from Falmouth Town Station if you head towards the town centre. Situated at the Maritime Museum end of the high street and has its own short stay car park between Trago Mills Store and the Chain Locker Pub if you are driving (see long term parking below) and want to drop your bags first. 

Falmouth Visitors Yacht Haven is about 100 yards beyond Custom House Quay but if walking from the rail station towards town it is best if you walk accross Custom House Quay short term car park  and nip through the alley tunnel through the Chain Locker Pub. The yacht haven is a small marina only yards from Falmouth main shopping street (Arwenack St),  tucked away down the bottom of Quay Street.

How to get here

By Road & Parking

The A30 is the best route into Cornwall for Falmouth.

There are short stay car parks at Custom House Quay for the Yacht Haven to drop your bags.

Likewise for Port Pendennis there is a short stay car park by the Maritime Museum event square.

Once you have dropped your bags you can normally find free parking within ten minutes walk of any harbour point in Falmouth by just parking in local residential streets.

Long stay parking

There is a small, private, car park owned by Port Pendennis Marina, off Tinners Walk (TR11 3YL). You can pay for a week, using change at the pay and display ticket machine, for £35 approx. (No credit card facility YOU MUST HAVE CHANGE)

There is a long stay car park with a daily fee of £3 or a weekly fee of £18 (pay and display machine so bring change) off Tinner Walk close to the Falmouth Docks entrance and the RNLI station.  This is a private car park owned by Port Pendennis Marina but you will still be expected to pay - even if the vessel is in the marina.  Please do not risk the free berth holders car park next to the tennis courts.  

Rail & transfers

Train to the Falmouth Town Station which is on the branch line from Truro (or next halt is Falmouth Docks if joining a vessel in the docks). Trains come into Cornwall to Truro from many parts of the UK. http://www.raileasy.co.uk

Air & transfers

Newquay Airport (NQY) is about 40 miles away and about £55 taxi fare, or you could get a taxi to Truro for about £30 and jump on the train to Falmouth from there.

Maybe is very much a sail training vessel and her style of sailing is very 'hand's on' but with a lot of patient instruction from the professional crew. Maybe's skipper and mates are not afraid to shape a great team from total novices or mixed experience crews. They will encourage you to get involved in every aspect of ship board life, from cooking to standing watch. British owned Maybe is a regular contender in the International Tall Ships Races and regattas and has sailed around the world several times.

Full Participation and mixed age crews

Gaff ketch 'Maybe' works predominantly around the UK on youth development voyages, but she also offers adult adventure trips too. Her style of sailing is very 'hands on' but with a lot of patient instruction as the professional crew are used to working with crew from 12 to 80. Her winter base is the Algarve in Portugal so she has some ocean style and delivery trips for experienced sailors at the start and finish of the season too.

Tall Ships Races

International Tall Ships races have been happening for many summers. They defy cynicism, bring together young crews from nations that are hardly on speaking terms in the adult world, and give those participating the best thrill you can have in your school holidays.  Generally sail handling on a tall ship or sail training yacht is done slowly with lots of instruction and plenty of sea room from other vessels. In a tall ships race it is much more close quarters so things have to happen a lot faster and the vessels are sailed with dash rather than conservatism. You might get the odd bruise or blister but the sense of teamwork and pride in your ship seems to just happen during the thrill of the chase.  The parties in port are your well earned reward.

A Chance to Become Volunteer Crew

Maybe has a small professional crew and deliberately relies on volunteers as watch leaders or delivery crew. A Maybe voyage would be a good choice if you are thinking about a sailing career and you are really keen to progress your sailing skills. The skipper will be looking to recommend helpful hard working crew as possible volunteers who have good people skills and a sense of humour. There is usually a contribution towards meals if you sail as volunteer or delivery crew. You might even progress to a paid postion (Skipper, !st Mate, Engineer and Cook)

Her sister ship, belonging to the same NE sail training charity, is the three masted schooner Blue Clipper. This bigger vessel has month long crew placements to some really exciting destinations like the Arctic and the Caribbean so it is a great organisation to sail with to get your foot on the sailing career ladder.

Life On Board

Life on board really is about getting stuck in and involved in all aspects of sailing the ship. Beginners are welcome and the experienced crew will help to explain the different roles onboard which will quickly see you turn into a knowledgable traditional ship sailor! Please also note there is a non-smoking policy on board Maybe.

Tall Ship Maybe has the capacity for up to 18 crew members on each sailing voyage, which includes 2-4 permanent crew and 14 places for trainee crew members or 12 passengers. 

She has extensive comfortable accommodation below deck including five newly refurbished cabin, a large saloon/galley area fitted with all modern conveniences including TV, DVD Player, fully fitted kitchen with microwave, fridge, freezer, cooker, induction hob and slow cooker.  For the comfort of the crew, central heating has been installed to make even winter sailing a pleasure.

What to bring


There is limited storage space on Maybe so please pack all you belongings in a soft rucksack or bag.

  • Footwear: Shoes with a good grip e.g. trainers or sailing deck shoes. (Sandals are great for beaches but you do need toe protection for sailing). Agnes has solid wood decks so waterproof walking boots are fine at sea in moderate winds and dry conditions and great for voyages where you might do some rough terrain walking like Scillies or Scotland voyages.
  • Rubber Boots or second pair of shoes for wet weather or getting in/out of dinghies. 
  • Swim suit & beach towel
  • Suntan lotion & sunglasses
  • Sun hat / warm hat, scarves, gloves
  • Clothes that dry quickly like fleeces and thermals. Mix of warm, waterproof & windproof layers. Wool jumpers are warm, even when wet, but can take a while to dry. Merino wool type shirts are good for under layers.
  • Small rucksack for going ashore
  • Travel insurance documents/any travel tickets
  • Passport for French Voyages, Ireland or any 6 day voyage like Scillies where Brittany might be an alternative option. On French voyages Reciprocal Free Health Care Card for Europe.

This was my first trip. Wanted to experience the landscape from a different perspective and get to places I couldn’t easily reach otherwise.

Amazing!

I recently joined MAYBE on a delivery voyage from South Portugal to West Wales. I have had some amazing experiences in life but this topped it for me. Not only having an opportunity to sails a much bigger boat than I am used to but also dealing with much more challenging seas than I am used to. Delivery Trip

TS Maybe delivery trip Portimao, Portugal to Cork, Ireland (in the end) was an amazing experience. Having always wanted to do longer sailing passages, experience ocean sailing and push myself with challenging experiences, this lived up to everything I expected. It was a shame we were plagued with non-stop N/NE winds that meant we couldn't sail without motor as much as I would have liked...but that's the nature of the trip. A massive thank you to all the rest of the crew who were great folk and hats off, praise & thanks to Skipper Seb, Helen, Jessie & Mo who guided us on the passage. An incredible voyage, a great memory and a taste for more of the same. And at times it was like Bake Off at sea!

As long as the voyage is not about to start, Classic Sailing can reserve your place for 7 days without payment or financial commitment, whilst you talk to your boss, find a home to look after your dog, or check flight prices.

All Classic Sailing need from you is a completed booking form to start the process: We check availability, approve your booking form, and provisionally reserve a berth.  You place is confirmed and booking terms apply, only when you have paid the deposit. We strongly recommend you do not purchase flights or travel tickets until your voyage is fully confirmed.

Solo Sailors and Solo Occupancy

The majority of our sailors sail on their own. The boats will always ensure that solo sailors sharing the same cabin are the same sex. Sole occupancy is available on some vessels which will have an extra % charge which varies by vessel.
