FULL VOYAGE DESCRIPTION

A great combination of the West Coast of Sweden, Southern Norway and round the corner to Stavanger. An extra 2 days has been added.

On a sailing voyage we never use the word itinerary, as skippers will always be aiming for the best sailing and shore landings for the forecast and most idyllic or sheltered anchors and ports. They are as keen as you to include some of the highlights described below, but you have to go with Mother Nature, not fight her.

AARHAUS

Aarhus, was named by Lonely Planet as one of 10 European destinations you should see. Diverse, modern and fun, Aarhus is one of the happiest cities on Earth. It also was European Capital of Culture 2017. A visit to Aarhus’ art galleries, cosy Latin Quarter or the Old Town will show you just why Aarhus’ residents, and visitors, are so happy…After exploring Aarhus we make the short 20NM passage across to Samso Island.

SAMSØ ISLAND

Samsø is a Danish island in the Kattegat 15 kilometers off the Jutland Peninsula. Samsø is located in Samsø municipality. The community has 3,724 inhabitants called Samsings and is 114 km² in area.  Samsø has been energy-positive for the past decade, producing more energy from wind and biomass than it consumes.  Samsø residents can now boast a carbon footprint of negative 12 tonnes per person per year.  The island’s vision now is to be fossil fuel-free by 2030. Two years ago the municipality replaced its diesel-powered ferry with one that runs on gas, and the long-term plan is to convert the ferry to run off island-generated biofuel and wind-charged batteries. Other petrol-powered vehicles will also be phased out in favour of electric or biofuel alternatives.

Why not spend the day exploring Samsø by hiring a bike.  With its varied scenery, many villages and short distances, the island is perfect for short and long trips on the bike for the whole family.  Quiet motor traffic and good, wide bike paths all the way from Tranebjerg on the middle of the island to Nordby in north makes the island a safe place to bicycle.  Will the little leg weary, there is always short distance to a comfortable rest in one of Samsøs 22 villages, winding through the landscape, and in many of them you can refresh yourself with a drink in the summer heat.

HALMSTAD

From Samsø we make the 100nm passage to Halmstad, Sweden.  Halmstad is a port, university, industrial and recreational city at the mouth of Nissan in the province of Halland on the Swedish west coast.  The municipality of Halmstad is home to many cultural gems. This includes Sweden’s largest gallery and the Mjellby art museum, where the famed Halmstadgruppen’s work is on permanent display. The city also houses works by Milles and Picasso. The Halmstad library has won prestigious architecture awards – it’s considered a great fount of knowledge, as well as a marvellous building. The city also enjoys a thriving music and theatre scene, and people travel from far afield to see shows and concerts.

Halmstad is known as one of Sweden’s most popular tourist destinations. It offers a fine mix of big city pulse and small-town charm, salty shorelines and calm rivers. There’s plenty to entertain outdoor activity seekers, with 11 golf courses and 200 km of cycle paths. It features long stretches of beach, lining the 40 km of coastline, with peaceful inland waterways bordered by the Småland forest. These great natural features make Halmstad an idyllic location for tourists who want the best of two worlds – lush countryside and great beaches.

GOTHENBURG

Gothenburg (also known as Göteborg) is a chilled, cosmopolitan port on the west coast of Sweden. It’s the country’s second-largest city, and it’s garnered a well-earned reputation for its highly proactive environmental work. Gothenburg can boast a long relationship with the Tall Ships Races – in 2016 it welcomed the fleet for the fifth time since 1968.

The port is nestled within the unique Kattegat – a beautiful body of water that’s shaped by the Jutlandic Peninsula and the Straits of Denmark. You can expect to come across several stunning, 17th-century canals in the city, along with boutique shops, neoclassical and modern art and architecture, and trendy cafes and bars.

THE NORWEGIAN RIVIERA

From Gothenburg we make our way across the Skagerrak to Kristiansand on the South coast of Norway. From here we make our way along the Norwegian coast with so many pretty fishing harbours to visit and coastal landmarks.  With Blue Clipper previously making this voyage on the Cruise in Company, the crew will definitely know the best places to stop on route.  Also, this coastal region of Norway is great for sailing, so you can really get to grips with sailing Blue Clipper and learning all about sailing and living on board a tall ship.

KRISTIANSAND

Kristiansand is the largest city in Southern Norway.  Its old town, Posebyen features traditional wooden houses and in the centre, neo-gothic Kristiansand Cathedral is near the Sorlandets Museum, which displays Norwegian art from 1800 to today.  The South-eastern shoreline includes the Bystranda city beach, the 17th century Chrsitiansholm Fortress reotunda and Fiskebrygga quay, lined with fishmongers selling their catch.

STAVANGER

There’s a reason this coastal town has been twinned with Houston and Aberdeen: it’s sometimes known as Norway’s ‘Oil City’ for its importance in oil exploration in the North Sea since the 1970s (Norway’s largest oil company, Statoil, is based here). But while much of the outskirts are modern, you won’t find too many skyscrapers – Stavanger’s old centre has some of the most beautiful and best-preserved wooden buildings anywhere in Norway, many dating back to the 18th century. It’s all very pretty, and in summer the waterfront comes alive in the best port-town style.

Whether you are an experienced sailor or a complete beginner, the professional crew will train you to be guest crew from the moment you arrive, with the intention that everybody works together to sail the ship. The common thread to all Classic Sailing holidays is ‘Hands on’ participation on ships that use ropes, blocks and tackles and ‘people power’ to set sail.

How to get here

Aarhus Airport is located 45 kilometres north of Aarhus, and a regular bus service takes passengers from the airport to Aarhus bus station in 50 minutes for DKK 85. Buses leave from outside the main terminal building.
The bus schedule is according to Flight times. Taxis can also be found outside the main entrance and a ride to Aarhus will take you back around 550 DKK.

Detailed information with regards to port information will be given nearer to departure. However, it is usual at the Tall Ship Race events, that at the entrance gate, a large map will be on display outlining all vessels and berths.

The Tall Ships are coming to Stavanger in 2018!

The ships exact location in port is often controlled by the port authorities and they will only allocate a docking position a few days before. You will be informed as soon as possible of their exact joining location.

Any changes will be communicated to you before your voyage start date. Make sure you make a note of the ship's number found in your confirmation email in case of any problems on the day.

The bus and train stations lie between the lake Breivann and old harbour, only a 10 minute walk from the harbour.

Tall Ships Race Fleet comes to Stavanger 2018

Stavanger - The Stavanger Region is Norway’s 3rd largest urban area with around 300,000 inhabitants.

 In July 2011 Stavanger welcomed you to the Tall Ship Races for the third time. They will be back again in 2018. The city has a lot of old wharf space in the centre of town which is part of the vibrant urban streetscape so 34 tall ships and smaller vessels will create a sea of masts and great photographic opportunities.

Stavanger - a vibrant and energetic city

Stavanger is Norway's third largest city but retains a small port feel around the old harbour. It is a rich city as the centre of the oil industry, and past importance as a fishing centre.The City of Stavanger was European Capital of Culture in 2008. There is a medieval cathedral, much timber architecture including big timber wharf buildings on the waterfront, and lovely parks, lakes and harbourside walks.  There is a high concentration of museums and many resturants and bars - all within walking distance from the harbour. Debbie recommoends the Oil Museum which has some great models of oil rigs and full size under water submersables.

Gamle - Old Stavanger & Artists Quarter

On the other side of the historic harbour is Old Stavanger where cobblestone walkways pass between well preserved early 18th century white washed wooden houses. It is now home to all sorts of artists studios selling paintings, ceramics, weavings and hand crafted jewelry.

Stavanger Region for a holiday

Besides from a festive programme in the harbour with ships, great food and buzzling crowds there are many reasons to stay in the region after or before your Classic Sailing Voyage.

Stavanger is today a friendly, urban city surrounded by spectacular scenery of beaches, mountains and fjords.The southwestern part of Norway is the starting point for the world famous fjords and the most famous attraction is perhaps Pulpit Rock, a giant vertical rock face, towering 604 meters above the sea at the inlet of the 41 kilometres-deep Lysefjorden. Sitting on a ledge on the mountainside, with a drop of 600 meters down to the sea, it is easy to see why this spectacular landscape is so widely appealing.

And yet, there is so much more than deep fjords, spectacular waterfalls and high mountains. Stavanger has a vibrant cultural life, something which you will get to experience during the Tall Ships Races in 2011. As a result of the municipalities focus on art and culture, the Stavanger Region became the European Capital of Culture in 2008 - a gigantic cultural event attracting more than 70% of the population in the region in addition to visitors from all over the world.

Sailing Style

Step on board TS Blue Clipper for active sailing with an edge of luxury. Classic Sailing only work with dynamic sailing ships that offer 'hands on sailing.' It is part of our ethos and Blue Clipper's that everyone on board is encouraged to help sail the ship.

If you have never sailed before, the patient and attentive crew will enjoy showing you the ropes and encourage you to get involved in handling sails, taking the helm, helping with navigation and climbing the rigging if you wish. For more experienced sailors, there is always plenty to learn as the ship is constantly being maintained to a very high standard and the enthusiastic and professional crew are eager to share their knowledge with you as guest voyage crew.

Life on Board

Blue Clipper's permanent crew is usually a combination of paid professionals, experienced volunteers and one trainee for those under the age of 25 years. The crew are all dedicated members and their energy and enthusiasm is infectious. Although Blue Clipper prides herself on hospitality and comfort, the main focus on all voyages is adult sail training where the crew will train you from the moment you step onboard in both emergency procedures, sail handling, helming, navigating, wildlife and anything else you would like to learn. 

Blue Clipper has no square sails (yet!), but she still has plenty of canvas to play with, including on the three masts, schooner, main and mizzen with topsails for each of those. There is also the option to have three head sails including the stay sails. With plenty of different sail sizes, there is a rig configuration for all conditions and there is always a reason to climb any of the masts or climb out on the bowsprit to help with dropping sails, or simply to gain a different perspective on the ship as she cuts through the water. 

For sailing on Blue Clipper, you will be required to climb, unaided a steep set of steps of over 2m to access the accommodation areas.

WATCHES

On longer ocean passages, or trips that involve sailing through the night the ship will operate a watch system to keep the ship sailing 24 hours a day. There is Red, White and Blue watch. Watches are usually four hours long followed by 8 hours off. The afternoon watch is split in two to enable a complete rotation of watches every three days. 

Although not compulsory, you will get more out of the experience if you fully immerse yourself in the routine of being at sea.

When on watch, it is the responsibility of the watch leader and their team to handle the safe navigation of the ship, adjust sails and keep a lookout for any hazards. You have a chance to learn all aspects of traditional sailing from our wonderful deck crew; having a chance to steer the ship, complete the log book entries, plot our course on the chart, climb the rigging, and experience amazing starry skies during a night watch at sea!

Laundry

We are able to do laundry on longer passages, depending on the sea conditions. If you would like to do laundry on board please speak to the hospitality manager or stewardess on board. The fee for laundry service is £5. Please note that the ship cannot accept liability for damage to clothing caused by this service.

Accommodation & Layout

Tall Ship Blue Clipper has extensive accommodation below decks and can accommodate up to 18 guest trainees on board, with 6 twin en-suite cabins, a four berth cabin with a huge shared bathroom there are also 4 bunks in the forepeak cabin, but these bunks are smaller and as you are right in the bow - are the least comfortable. There is also a well-equipped galley and plenty of places to sit and relax on deck. At capacity, she can sleep 28 people including professional crew. There will usually be between 8 and 10 permanent crew onboard with you, they are all highly experienced in their relevant fields. 

There is a large comfortable saloon area with a bar area to make tea and coffee. The saloon is on deck level with windows to both sides so you can enjoy the view without going outside on those wet days! Meals are served in the saloon and the onboard chef prepares 3 meals a day, breakfast, lunch and a two course evening meal. Drinks are available throughout the day, with alcoholic beverages available with evenings meals on a TAB system, this can be paid for at the end of the voyage by card or cash, or bar vouchers purchased before you join the ship.

In mid ships, there is a large area of deck between the saloon and the galley which is perfect for a spot of morning yoga, a snooze in a hammock or a great place for briefings from the Captain. The hospitality element is not to be overlooked and the food prepared by the professional cook is always to an excellent standard. 

Cabins

6 of the guest cabins are twin, ensuite cabins with plenty of storage space, two spacious bunks (bunk bed style),a writing desk, bathroom with shower and toilet, air conditioning and heating, and are decorated and finished to a high standard. Each bed has a comfortable memory foam mattress, duvet and pillow. Each bunk has it's own reading light and all cabins have a porthole for natural light. 

There is also a four person cabin with a huge ensuite bathroom to share and plenty of storage space with double aspect views to both sides of the ship. 

Each cabin has heating/air conditioning available. This is controlled for the whole ship by the chief engineer. Each cabin has an individual thermostat on the wall so you can control the temperature.

All cabins have plug sockets for charging electrical devices. These are European 2 pin sockets. We ask that you do not leave items on charge when you are not in the cabin.

What to Bring

In Europe, on transatlantic trips or in the Arctic warm and waterproof clothing is very important, as it can get very cold during sailing, especially at night, even in the summer. A waterproof and windproof jacket is recommended to help keep warm and dry. Waterproof rubber soled boots or shoes are also recommended to keep your feet dry and warm. It is a good idea to bring two pairs of shoes in case one gets wet!

In the Caribbean or on ocean passages in the tropics, then a lighter waterproof jacket should be fine. Waterproof trousers are probably not needed if you have several pairs of shorts. You can get occasional torrential rain in the Caribbean but it is short lived and clothes dry quickly (if it is only rain water on them and not a large dollop of salt water). 

Please remember that space on board is limited and pack accordingly. Pack comfortable and practical clothing for all weather circumstances, the key is layers!! It is recommended to pack in a soft bag that can be easily stored away as there is no room on board for suitcases. Electricity on board is European 2 pin sockets, please be sure to bring any adaptors you may need.

The fee for laundry service is £5 per load. Please note that the ship's operators do not accept liability for damage to clothing caused by this service.

Passports, Visas and Insurance

If you voyage is sailing in foreign waters, you will require a full passport that is valid for at least 6 months after the end of the voyage. You will be responsible for obtaining any necessary visas.

We have Third Party Liability Insurance and recommend all those sailing with us to take out relevant travel insurance to cover their voyage. 

Medical Conditions and Special Diets

Please inform us in advance of any medical conditions you have and medication which you might need to bring with you. If you have any special dietary requirements it is essential you inform us prior to your voyage. We will make every effort to cater for all diets with prior notice.

Personal Items

This is a list of the items we recommend you bring with you.

  • Warm hat and gloves (or sun hat and very good sunglasses for Caribbean)
  • Wet weather clothing – waterproof and windproof jacket and trousers for Europe.  (Caribbean - a waterproof jacket for occasional tropical downpours)
  • Clothing – enough clothing for all weather circumstances (think layers for Europe or cotton for tropics)
  • In Caribbean you might need long sleeves and trousers against sunburn or mosquitos ashore in evening (or a good repellant).
  • Trainers or deck shoes (2 pairs handy if not bringing boots)
  • Toiletries
  • Towels
  • Sun cream
  • Sunglasses
  • Sea sickness medication
  • Personal medication
  • Book
  • Small torch (head torches are good!)
  • Camera

Shiant Islands

What was the best bit?

The views generally, but views of Scottish islands in the sun and /or covered in dramatic clouds were spectacular. The Shiant islands were an amazing place to stop and get off the boat (careful not to disturb the birds though). Another highlight was dolphins swimming alongside. The crew were wonderful.

 

What was the worst bit?

Scottish Islands
Spotting an Orca!

Over the first couple of days we got to go out onto the bowsprit with a member of the crew. It was wonderful to sit there and watch the sea stretch for miles ahead, and see the whole boat behind us. The best bit came a few days later when I got to go out on the bowsprit again but this time to help bring down some sails. The seas were a little choppier this time round, but wrestling the jibs against the winds was truly exhilarating!

Best bit? Spotting an Orca on the 4am watch, off the coast of Ireland. Plenty of dolphins, and my first great skua. The last day was a fantastic sail, beautiful weather, perfect conditions, (we had an awful lot of rain) The crew were super; friendly, supportive, good fun, and professional. They obviously get on well together, which makes a huge difference. They were particularly helpful in an unobtrusive way, bearing in mind that I have one arm. I can't praise them highly enough - guest crew from Liverpool to Scotland 2019. 

Remote Islands

I sailed this time because I never had and wanted to try something new. When I was 11 I had read Swallows and Amazons and had become a little obsessed with the idea of sailing, but I couldn't sail then. So part of me wanted to give my 11 year old self a gift! I will be sailing more now that I've experienced it. In particular I enjoyed the large amounts of learning on board the vessel. I loved learning about knots, the weather, the stars, course plotting, the different lines and sails. I also like the idea of visiting remote islands, and sailing seems like a good way to do that over the next couple of years. Visiting the Pacific Islands would be particularly exciting! Guiness - Whisky

I thoroughly enjoyed the voyage with Steve, Emma and their crew. We were well looked after, the cabins were warm, the beds comfortable, the food was great. Particularly Emma was very keen to get us involved and to increase our boating/sailing knowledge. the hospitality was phenomenal. The boat is clearly well looked after and the crew function well as a team. they went out of their way to teach us Gaelic, Scottish songs (much appreciated!) and organise day trips on land. Victoria Janes (Guinness – Whisky TS Blue Clipper)

Crew were amazing!

Just a quick note to say that myself and Marika really enjoyed our trip. The staff were amazing so please do pass on my thanks especially to Ezmay for her amazing food (although have gone up about two dress sizes in about a week!) and to the two Kats and Katie who really looked after us. What was the best bit?

It's hard to choose one best part as it was a wonderful trip with a lovely crew. But if pushed I would say going out on the bow sprit with the sun shining and the turquoise sea below my feet - definitely the best place be when sailing.

What was the worst bit?

Discovering for the first time in my life that I do actually suffer from seasickness. Boooo

Why do you sail?

I sail primarily to see the world in a different way, to slow down and arrive in ports they way they are intended to be seen. I like going to parts of the world not primarily to sit around, but to be active and for the journey to be as important (or more important) than the destination.
