FULL VOYAGE DESCRIPTION

Join Blue Clipper in Ullapool and enjoy sailing North between the islands and the Highlands. Once north of Skye there is less shelter but it is only 47 miles to Stornoway in the Outer Hebrides. Beyond that is the open sea and 230 miles to the Faroes. The biggest hop of open ocean is the 600 miles between here and Reykjavik.


On a sailing voyage we never use the word itinerary, as skippers will always be aiming for the best sailing and shore landings for the forecast and most idyllic or sheltered anchors and ports. They are as keen as you to include some of the highlights described below, but you have to go with mother nature, not fight her. The description below is based on what we think might be possible, based on past trips, or experience, but nothing is guaranteed on a sailing voyage.

The Faroes

Adrift in the whirling rhythmic North Atlantic Sea, a different world lingers. An idyllic escape, peacefully set among lush green valleys, imposing basalt cliffs, grand treeless moorlands and waterfalls plunging directly into the wind whipped ocean.  Unfathomable beauty mysteriously tucked away like a figment of a child’s imagination.  There will be opportunities to go ashore and visit these unspoilt islands, often referred to as Europe’s best kept secret!


There are 18 islands in the Faroes group and they all stand fully exposed to the fury of the North Atlantic. As Blue Clipper disembarks the Faroes she will begin her passage to Iceland, 600 NM across the North Atlantic Ocean, expect wildlife galore during this 5 day passage.

Iceland

Magnificent scenery, clarity of light and the raw power of nature make Iceland a truly amazing place to visit.  Immerse yourself in ethereal panoramic landscapes and breathe in the pure mountain air of this unspoiled land. Waterfalls cascade from the rugged volcanic cliffs and as the seas are rich in fish, these are good voyages for Whale and Dolphin watching.  Having sailed Blue Clipper all the way to Iceland, surely you will be tempted to stay for the next voyage and explore more.

WINDS, WAVES & WEATHER

You need good warm and waterproof clothing at this time of year, but you are voyaging through an area well known for chunky fisherman's jumpers. Imagine how the Vikings and early traders felt as they set off towards Iceland. 

HANDS ON HOLIDAYS

Whether you are an experienced sailor or a complete beginner, the professional crew will train you to be guest crew from the moment you arrive, with the intention that everybody works together to sail the ship. The common thread to all Classic Sailing holidays is ‘Hands on’ participation on ships that use ropes, blocks and tackles and ‘people power’ to set sail.

Ullapool - The Port

As a base for starting a sailing holiday, Ullapool rewards those who take the trouble to travel this far North. On the entrance to Loch Broom are the Summer Isles and if you head out West you come to the Shiant Islands before your reach Harris and Lewis. From here, it is a relatively short hop to St Kilda, or the Flannan Isles. The sailing grounds are virtually empty and in June it feels like the sun hardly sets. At nearly N 58 degrees latitude Ullapool is further North than Moscow. Its a long way up from Edinburgh, but not as difficult to get to as you might think.

Ullapool is nestled on the shores of Loch Broom. Whatever the weather, you are immediately struck by Ullapool's whiteness and by its regularity of design and layout. This is a legacy of the town's origins, being designed and built in 1788 by Thomas Telford and the British Fisheries Society to exploit a boom in herring fishing at the time.

The town is also the main terminus for the car and passenger ferry to Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis. The ferry operates seven days per week so all the public transport to Ullapool is good and there are plenty of accommodation options in the town.

Ullapool Town Facilities

As a base for exploring the north west of Scotland, Ullapool is ideal. It has accommodation to suit all tastes and pockets, including one of the best (and best located) campsites in this part of Scotland. And since the upgrading of most of the roads further north it is within reasonable reach of many parts of the region that twenty-five years ago would have needed a major expedition to reach.

Ullapool offers some very nice pubs, including the Ferry Boat Inn. It also has a range of shops from the smallest right up to a well-stocked supermarket: anyone on a self catering holiday is sure to be visiting the latter at some point during their stay.

For those wanting to know more about the area the excellent Ullapool Museum & Visitor Centre on West Argyle Street can be highly recommended. This is in the old parish church, and tells the story of the people of Loch Broom and the history of Ullapool.

How to get here

By Road & Parking

Spectacular driving once in the Highlands but allow plenty of time and rest stops. It is 210 miles between Edinburgh and Ullapool.

Rail & transfers

By train from Edinburgh: There are trains to Edinburgh up both the West and East coast of Britain. Once in Scotland the only train choice is Edinburgh Haymarket up to Inverness from Edinburgh. You then need to travel from Inverness on the East side of Scotland to the West coast by bus -approx 1 hour 20 mins. There is no train station in Ullapool, the nearest station is at Garve and this is a sub-line between Inverness and Kyle. 

If travelling all the way to Ullapool from Southern England by train, try ticket split websites to find best prices.

Air & transfers

Quickest option is to fly direct to Inverness airport from various regional and international airports.

Flying to Inverness airport - current flight routes include scheduled routes from London Heathrow, Gatwick and Luton, Belfast, Dublin, Bristol, Manchester, Birmingham, and Amsterdam.

Driving from Inverness Airport to Ullapool Port takes about 1 hour 15 mins by taxi, so if you are pushed for time this is your fastest option.

There is a shuttle bus from airport to Inverness Bus Station every 30 mins for £2-3 (2015 price) and it takes about 23 minutes.

Buses from Inverness Bus Station to Ullapool Ferry Terminal run 4 times a day costing approx £12 single and taking 1 hour 22 minutes.

Nearby Reykjavik City Airport is the departure airport for domestic flights in Iceland such as Isafjordur. Isafjordur-

Isafjordur is easy to reach by plane. There is a flight twice a day. From the airport you can get to the Tecla by bus, which stops at the hotel just 2 minutes walking away from Tecla. Or you can rent a car and drive. It is possible to rent the car and leave it on the airport on both sides. Take some time and see more of Iceland along the way!

How to get here

Air & transfers

The flights to Iceland from the UK take about 2 hours are now hugely cheaper than they were a few years ago.

You can get spectacularly cheap return flights to Keflavik- even Icelandair sometimes has flights for around £90 return, but the peak summer season is short so last minute flights  can be higher.....so plan ahead and book early if you can.

Sailing Style

Step on board TS Blue Clipper for active sailing with an edge of luxury. Classic Sailing only work with dynamic sailing ships that offer 'hands on sailing.' It is part of our ethos and Blue Clipper's that everyone on board is encouraged to help sail the ship.

If you have never sailed before, the patient and attentive crew will enjoy showing you the ropes and encourage you to get involved in handling sails, taking the helm, helping with navigation and climbing the rigging if you wish. For more experienced sailors, there is always plenty to learn as the ship is constantly being maintained to a very high standard and the enthusiastic and professional crew are eager to share their knowledge with you as guest voyage crew.

Life on Board

Blue Clipper's permanent crew is usually a combination of paid professionals, experienced volunteers and up to four trainees for those under the age of 25 years. The crew are all dedicated members and their energy and enthusiasm is infectious. Although Blue Clipper prides herself on hospitality and comfort, the main focus on all voyages is adult sail training where the crew will train you from the moment you step onboard in both emergency procedures, sail handling, helming, navigating, wildlife and anything else you would like to learn. 

Blue Clipper has no square sails (yet!), but she still has plenty of canvas to play with, including on the three masts, schooner, main and mizzen with topsails for each of those. There is also the option to have three head sails including the stay sails. With plenty of different sail sizes, there is a rig configuration for all conditions and there is always a reason to climb any of the masts or climb out on the bowsprit to help with dropping sails, or simply to gain a different perspective on the ship as she cuts through the water. 

For sailing on Blue Clipper, you will be required to climb, unaided a steep set of steps of over 2m to access the accommodation areas.

WATCHES

On longer ocean passages, or trips that involve sailing through the night the ship will operate a watch system to keep the ship sailing 24 hours a day. There is Red, White and Blue watch. Watches are usually four hours long followed by 8 hours off. The afternoon watch is split in two to enable a complete rotation of watches every three days. 

Although not compulsory, you will get more out of the experience if you fully immerse yourself in the routine of being at sea.

When on watch, it is the responsibility of the watch leader and their team to handle the safe navigation of the ship, adjust sails and keep a lookout for any hazards. You have a chance to learn all aspects of traditional sailing from our wonderful deck crew; having a chance to steer the ship, complete the log book entries, plot our course on the chart, climb the rigging, and experience amazing starry skies during a night watch at sea!

Laundry

We are able to do laundry on longer passages, depending on the sea conditions. If you would like to do laundry on board please speak to the hospitality manager or stewardess on board. The fee for laundry service is £5. Please note that the ship cannot accept liability for damage to clothing caused by this service.

Accommodation & Layout

Tall Ship Blue Clipper has extensive accommodation below decks and can accommodate up to 12 guest trainees on board, with 6 twin en-suite cabins, a luxury double cabin, large saloon areas which are beautifully decorated and maintained, a well-equipped galley and plenty of places to sit and relax on deck. At capacity, she can sleep 28 people including professional crew. There will usually be between 8 and 10 permanent crew onboard with you, they are all highly experienced in their relevant fields. 

There is a large comfortable saloon area with a bar area to make tea and coffee. The saloon is on deck level with windows to both sides so you can enjoy the view without going outside on those wet days! Meals are served in the saloon and the onboard chef prepares 3 meals a day, breakfast, lunch and a two course evening meal. Drinks are available throughout the day, with alcoholic beverages available with evenings meals on a TAB system, this can be paid for at the end of the voyage or bar vouchers purchased before you join the ship.

In mid ships, there is a large area of deck between the saloon and the galley which is perfect for a spot of morning yoga, a snooze in a hammock or a great place for briefings from the Captain. The hospitality element is not to be overlooked and the food prepared by the professional cook is always to an excellent standard. 

Cabins

All guest cabins are twin, ensuite cabins with plenty of storage space, two spacious bunks (bunk bed style),a writing desk, bathroom with shower and toilet, air conditioning and heating, and are decorated and finished to a high standard. Each bed has a comfortable memory foam mattress, duvet and pillow. Each bunk has it's own reading light and all cabins have a porthole for natural light. 

There is also a luxury double suite, with large double bed, huge ensuite bathroom, seating area and plenty of storage space with double aspect views to both sides of the ship. 

Each cabin has heating/air conditioning available. This is controlled for the whole ship by the chief engineer. Each cabin has an individual thermostat on the wall so you can control the temperature.

All cabins have plug sockets for charging electrical devices. These are European 2 pin sockets. We ask that you do not leave items on charge when you are not in the cabin.

What to Bring

Warm and waterproof clothing is very important, as it can get very cold during sailing, especially at night, even in the summer. A waterproof and windproof jacket is recommended to help keep warm and dry. Waterproof rubber soled boots or shoes are also recommended to keep your feet dry and warm. It is a good idea to bring two pairs of shoes in case one gets wet!

Please remember that space on board is limited and pack accordingly. Pack comfortable and practical clothing for all weather circumstances, the key is layers!! It is recommended to pack in a soft bag that can be easily stored away as there is no room on board for suitcases. Electricity on board is European 2 pin sockets, please be sure to bring any adaptors you may need.

Passports, Visas and Insurance

If you voyage is sailing in foreign waters, you will require a full passport that is valid for at least 6 months after the end of the voyage. You will be responsible for obtaining any necessary visas.

We have Third Party Liability Insurance and recommend all those sailing with us to take out relevant travel insurance to cover their voyage. 

Medical Conditions and Special Diets

Please inform us in advance of any medical conditions you have and medication which you might need to bring with you. If you have any special dietary requirements it is essential you inform us prior to your voyage. We will make every effort to cater for all diets with prior notice.

Over the first couple of days we got to go out onto the bowsprit with a member of the crew. It was wonderful to sit there and watch the sea stretch for miles ahead, and see the whole boat behind us. The best bit came a few days later when I got to go out on the bowsprit again but this time to help bring down some sails. The seas were a little choppier this time round, but wrestling the jibs against the winds was truly exhilarating!

 

Unfortunately I got a little seasick one of the nights. I think it couldn't be avoided, and soon learned that sleeping through it can be really helpful. Vomiting on deck also helped... This didn't ruin the trip though! It was really the only low-light.

 

I sailed this time because I never had and wanted to try something new. When I was 11 I had read Swallows and Amazons and had become a little obsessed with the idea of sailing, but I couldn't sail then. So part of me wanted to give my 11 year old self a gift! I will be sailing more now that I've experienced it. In particular I enjoyed the large amounts of learning on board the vessel. I loved learning about knots, the weather, the stars, course plotting, the different lines and sails. I also like the idea of visiting remote islands, and sailing seems like a good way to do that over the next couple of years. Visiting the Pacific Islands would be particularly exciting! I thoroughly enjoyed the voyage with Steve, Emma and their crew. We were well looked after, the cabins were warm, the beds comfortable, the food was great. Particularly Emma was very keen to get us involved and to increase our boating/sailing knowledge. the hospitality was phenomenal. The boat is clearly well looked after and the crew function well as a team. they went out of their way to teach us Gaelic, Scottish songs (much appreciated!) and organise day trips on land. Victoria Janes (Guinness – Whisky TS Blue Clipper)

Just a quick note to say that myself and Marika really enjoyed our trip. The staff were amazing so please do pass on my thanks especially to Ezmay for her amazing food (although have gone up about two dress sizes in about a week!) and to the two Kats and Katie who really looked after us. What was the best bit?

It's hard to choose one best part as it was a wonderful trip with a lovely crew. But if pushed I would say going out on the bow sprit with the sun shining and the turquoise sea below my feet - definitely the best place be when sailing.

What was the worst bit?

Discovering for the first time in my life that I do actually suffer from seasickness. Boooo

I sail primarily to see the world in a different way, to slow down and arrive in ports they way they are intended to be seen. I like going to parts of the world not primarily to sit around, but to be active and for the journey to be as important (or more important) than the destination. Solo sailors

The boats will always ensure that solo sailors sharing the same cabin are the same sex. If you wish to have sole occupancy of a cabin on any of our voyages a single occupancy charge will apply, this depends on which boat you wish to sail on.
