IDEAL VOYAGE FOR...

These voyages are primarily organised for young people between the ages of 15 and 21 years of age. It is a great way to meet like-minded people of a similar age, make new friends and have fun together as you learn to sail a traditional boat. Depending on the weather you will visit great places such as France, Devon, Cornwall and The Solent. The voyages coincide with the school and university holidays for maximum convenience. Many young people book individually and within in hours they will feel part of the team learning how to sail a traditional wooden ship and making friends!

FULL VOYAGE DESCRIPTION

Under the direction of Provident's professional skipper you will be working with your crew mates and be responsible for all aspects of running the vessel. No sailing experience is required.

You will work with the professional crew in order to mould yourself into a tight team and get to grips with sailing this beautiful and famous Brixham Trawler. Whether its preparing the boats for sea in the morning, working with the skipper to make a plan of where you will be going, cooking breakfast for the crew or cleaning the heads there is lots to get involved with. The sense of achievement at the end of the voyage is immense whether raw sailing novice or experienced sailor. You can also ask to complete you RYA competent crew course (which will involve a small admin cost) which is a good qualification to have if you want to keep on sailing after the voyage. One of the key requirements of this trip is that you want some fun!

What Can I Gain from the Training Course ?

Sailing a traditional vessel offers the perfect conditions to hone and perfect the social and team working skills so looked-for in our young people today.

They are as keen as you to include some of the highlights described below, but you have to go with Mother Nature, not fight her. The description below is based on what we think might be possible, based on past trips, or experience, but nothing is guaranteed on a sailing voyage.

On Provident you will find that the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, or any of the Adventure Sailing voyages can count towards your Gold Residential.

As an experienced provider of residential activities Provident operates within a structure of Standard Operating Procedures and policies. All activities you will be involved in have been risk assessed and we can provide copies of these assessments, as well as vessel and insurance certification, on request. If you, or your parents or carers, would like further information please call the office and speak to one of the team.

Provident is an approved provider for many local educational authorities.

Due to the vagaries of weather, tides, safety considerations, ships and crew abilities (amongst other things) or mechanical problems Classic Sailing Ltd can make no guarantee of the itinerary of the voyage, including, joining ports, destinations to visit and leaving ports. Every effort is made to fulfil the itinerary for the voyage but the Captain’s or Skipper’s decision is final. Joining and end ports are hardly ever changed but where they are as much notice as possible will be given and ways sought to alleviate connection problems.

HANDS ON HOLIDAYS

Whether you are an experienced sailor or a complete beginner, the professional crew will train you to be guest crew from the moment you arrive, with the intention that everybody works together to sail the ship. The common thread to all Classic Sailing holidays is ‘Hands on’ participation on ships that use ropes, blocks and tackles and ‘people power’ to set sail.

We cater for a wide range of ages and physical abilities and how much you are expected to do varies a bit between vessels. By Road & Parking

Driving Directions

From the North

On the M5, continue past Exeter. The road becomes the A38 shortly thereafter.
Keep left and fork LEFT onto the A380, signposted for Torquay. Continue on that road to the end of the dual carriageway, straight over the large roundabout at Newton Abbot and through Kingskerswell.
Then turn RIGHT at the next roundabout onto the Ring Road, signposted for Paignton and Brixham.
Carry on past the end of the dual carriageway and through the outskirts of Paignton. Go straight over at a large crossroads following signs for Brixham, past Booker, Sainsbury’s and Bookham on the right. Turn right at the next T-junction on the A3022, signposted Brixham and Dartmouth.
Stay on that road, keeping to the left-hand lane at the traffic lights on the outskirts of Brixham. At the traffic lights in the centre of the town, by Brixham Theatre, turn left into Market Street and follow signs for the harbour. Turn right into The Strand, leaving the harbour on the left. The road turns away from the harbour then hard left up King Street. You will see the harbour below you on the left.
About 600 yards further on there are signs for a car park on the left, by the water’s edge. Go down the ramp, turn left and drive past the lifeboat station to the unloading bay by the marina building. You are allowed time to put your belongings in a trolley and bring them to the pontoon where the boat will be moored, which is about 200 yards past the marina office.

From the East, 

On the A303 the road becomes the A30 and joins the M5 just North of Exeter. Follow instructions as above.

From the West, 

Stay on the A38 past Plymouth, exit at junction signposted to Totnes and Paignton by a shell garage. Follow the road into Totnes; turn Left at the first set of traffic lights down a hill, and then right at the T-junction. Go straight over the two roundabouts following signs to Paignton, and out of Totnes. As you enter Paignton turn right towards Brixham at the large junction, and follow directions as above.

Parking

After checking in, take your car to the long-stay 'Breakwater' car park on the opposite side of the main road. The entrance is about 50 yards past the entrance to the waterside car park and marina area. Post code is: TQ58BY: http://www.torbay.gov.uk/breakwater-cp

There are many car parks in Brixham, most are long stay with the exclusion of Brixham Central.

Classic Sailing tip- if you arrive early, drop your bags on board and look for street parking on the residential streets high above the harbour out towards Berry Head. Mounts Road is often a good bet .

 

Train

Paignton is the end of a Branch Line from Exeter St Davids (Main Station). Trains come to Exeter from many parts of the UK. http://www.raileasy.co.uk

Take the train to Paignton (may require a change at Exeter or Newton Abbot), and then by taxi (about 15 minutes) or bus (Number 12, 25) to Brixham. There is a taxi rank outside the train station and the bus station is opposite. The bus arrives in Brixham beside a car park. Walk through the car park to the far end, continue down the narrow lane at the end you will then come to the Harbour. Turn right, then left, keeping the harbour on your left, walk towards the Marina, the boats are on the Town Pontoon opposite The Prince William Pub.

Bus and Coach

History

Brixham has been a fishing port for many centuries and is still one of the biggest fishing ports in England.

The last invasion of England.

On 5th November 1688 Prince William of Orange landed in Brixham. Before moving on to Exeter and later to London, his army camped on the high ground around Brixham, whilst William ‘went down the hill unto the Fishermen's little house; one of which he made into a Palace for that time‘. He later went on to be crowned King William III of England.

Attractions

Brixham has a great little museum called Brixham Heritage Museum and is well worth a visit.
Berry Head is a large dramatic headland a short walk out of Town and there are lots of good coastal walks.

Provident

Provident is an original  Brixham Trawler built in Devon in 1924 and was one of the last sailing trawlers to be commissioned. She is one of the medium-sized trawlers, with sleek lines and lighter sails and spars than her bigger sister ship Leader. The ships wheel is a great vantage point to soak up views of the wooden decks and savour helming 85 tons of British working history, with the tan sails powering you along the coast.  Provident has been a charter vessels for decades so there always seems to be a former sailor saying hello on every quayside.

Adventure Cruising and Exploration Ashore

Provident adventure cruises are a mixture of activity afloat, exploration ashore and pure relaxation.  On most cruises fixed itineraries are avoided, allowing us the maximum freedom to go with the weather, not fight it, and to yield to the mood of the moment: to press on to a new destination that lies over the horizon, visit the local market or just ramble ashore, swim and enjoy a barbeque on a quiet beach.

Proving Historic Ships are Best at Sea - Not in a Museum.

1924 Provident is part of the core collection of the British Historic Ships Register. Provident has been a skippered charter vessel for over 65 years. Setting sail every day each season means she has introduced thousands of sailors to cruising and communal life aboard a traditionally rigged ship. Having a purpose helps her gain restoration grants and stay sailing in good condition. In 2017 she had new decks and work is always on-going. Willing volunteers have given her a lot of love and attention.

If you want to experience living history, help keep our maritime skills alive, or simply enjoy a long weekend doing something completely different, then Provident offers a few short breaks and day sails each year.  These 1-4 day voyages include all accommodation on board, sailing instruction and great meals, freshly prepared by the ships cook.

Crossing the English Channel

Brixham offers one of the best setting off ports to cross the Channel under sail. In prevailing South West or West winds you can go for a spirited fast reach to Brittany or the Channel Islands.  The wind angle for this route is a much better point of sailing and shorter distance than crossing from the Solent or Cornwall.

If you have done a bit of coastal sailing and a Channel crossing with night hours is your next goal, then signing up as crew on a deep keeled Brixham Trawler is a wonderful way to gain a taste of offshore sailing.  On a yacht crossing the channel at night, everyone typically stays clipped in and seated in the cockpit.  On a proper sailing ship the high bulwarks and flat decks make it possible to walk to a job rather than crawl. Standing at the wheel, steering by the stars is a wonderful feeling.

What to Expect on Provident

Sailing Style

Technique is more important than strength, so everyone can join in and learn to sail this magnificent vessel.  Alternatively, you can tuck yourself up in a corner with a good book.  How much or how little you do is entirely up to you.  The ships wheel is a great vantage point to soak up views of the wooden decks and savour helming 85 tons of British working history, with the tan sails powering you along the coast.

Provident is rigged now just as she was when she fished under sail early last century. She has a 'Gaff Rig', indicating that the Main and Mizzen sails are hoisted using a 'gaff', a spar attached to their upper side. The Ketch rig (two masts) was used to divide up the sail area, making each sail easier to handle by a small crew. The large number of sails (up to eight) makes it easy to 'change gear' by hoisting or lowering sails as required, depending upon the strength of the wind.

The Ketch rig is very versatile; good in light winds, when extra sails can be set (such as flying jib, mizzen topsail and mizzen staysail), good in heavy winds (she can sail under mizzen and staysail alone) and  good for manoeuvring (the mizzen can be used to help to balance and turn the boat).

Life on Board

The big saloon and oak table on Provident is so perfect for meals, that she is often the vessel of choice for social gatherings and parties if you are rafted up with other ships at festivals.  On a charter voyage you have your 'floating restaurant' to yourselves, but if the weather is nice then there are some great places to sit and eat on the 90 ft long deck.

Provident carries a dedicated ships cook (as well as a skipper, mate and bosun) and you can buy bottles of wine on board, on charter voyages.  Three meals a day, BBQ's ashore you don't have to pack for, and possibly the smell of cake or bread baking are all the advantages on sailing on a ketch with 4 professional crew.

Apart from a team effort with washing up, domestic chores are generally done by the ships crew too, but you might like to help scrub the decks for exercise (good for the core muscles and keeps the deck seams tight)

Accommodation on Provident

Down below, Provident has been fitted out for her modern role, but you can easily see her massive oak timbers and gain an appreciation of her hull strength, whilst being safely 'cocooned' in varnished wood.

She has accommodation for twelve guests and four crew, a large saloon area, a galley with a large, gas cooker, two toilets, a hot shower, and a generator that supplies a ring main with 240v electricity. She has a well equipped navigation station with modern navigation equipment including Radar, GPS and DSC VHF Radio.

Provident has relatively easy steps to negotiate to go below. Firstly you step down about 3 steps to the doghouse with has large windows to the deck. there there is a second set of steps down into the main saloon.

There is a huge wooden saloon table with cushioned seating and two pilot berths on the other side of the room. There is a door to two separate 2 berth cabins on either side of the doghouse.  Forward of the main mast is a two person cabin and a 4 person cabin.

There is separate crew quarters for 4 behind a bulkhead with its own hatch aft.

Ben Wheatley - Operations Manager/Relief Skipper

Ben started his maritime career sailing on square riggers, working his way up through the ranks to First Mate. He first joined the Brixham Trawler fleet in 2013 as skipper. After 12 years of working on tall ships and sailing to a number of beautiful destinations, Ben decided he wanted to find a place to base himself and start a family.

Today, Ben is based in Brixham where he oversees the operational side of the organisation, supporting the skippers and crew on board the vessels during the sailing season and coordinating the refit plans during the winter months. He enjoys spending time with his family, and gets to have his “tall ship fix” when he fills in as skipper for the fleet of vessels. He is a very knowledgeable skipper and loves to teach others. If you are one of the lucky ones that gets to sail with Ben this season and you are interested in traditional rigged vessels, he is the best person to ask!

  • Alcohol to have with meals when not sailing. (the ship generally has wine you can buy on board)

What to Bring

  • Hats for sun and cold weather.
  • At least two sets of warm clothes - layers e.g. tracksuit bottoms, shirts, fleece jacket, wool jumpers, thick socks, and neck scarf. It can get cold at sea even in mid summer.
  • Swim suit, towel, and suntan lotion.
  • Flat shoes with a good grip e.g. trainers or sailing deck shoes. Sailing boots or wellies as the sea can come over deck if rough.
  • (An alterative to boots in summer is to bring another pair of flat shoes with a good grip in case the first pair get wet).
  • All terrain type Sandals are great for dinghy trips ashore – but you do need shoes which protect your toes for sailing.
  • Camera, binoculars, sketchbook, a relaxing read.
  • Passport for all Voyages. (UK Customs Vessels can do spot checks anywhere around the coast, even if the ship is not going abroad. If you don't have a passport, another photo ID may be sufficient for UK waters voyages. Please contact us for advice)
  • Any medication, spare spectacles. Seasick tablets - check with your Doctor, which brand if you suffer from asthma or are on medication.
  • RYA Cruising Logbook for RYA Courses.
  • Musical instruments are always welcome.
